Overview

Shimba Hills National Reserve is a hidden gem, an ecosystem of rare coastal rainforest and rolling grasslands. It is famously one of the only places in Kenya where you can spot the majestic Sable Antelope in the wild. Your day begins with a morning pickup from your coastal hotel. As you ascend into the cooler hills, you enter a world of dense greenery and diverse wildlife.

The morning is dedicated to a game drive through the reserve’s open glades, keeping an eye out for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and if you are lucky, the endangered roan antelope and the iconic sable. After working up an appetite, you will enjoy a hearty lunch at a lodge overlooking the park.

The highlight of the afternoon is a guided hike through the rainforest to the base of Sheldrick Falls. The 2.5 km trek (each way) involves descending approximately 400 steps through the jungle, but the reward is a refreshing swim in the cool waters of the 25-meter waterfall. After a relaxing break at the falls, you will hike back up and begin your scenic descent back to the coast.

F.A.Q

Q: Is this safari suitable for children?

A: Due to the strenuous nature of the hike to Sheldrick Falls (approx. 5km with stairs), this tour is not recommended for children under 6 years old or those who cannot walk long distances

Q: What should I bring with me?

A: We highly recommend bringing:

  • Sturdy walking/hiking shoes

  • Swimsuit and towel (for swimming at the falls)

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat

  • Insect repellent

  • Camera and binoculars

  • Extra water - reviewers emphasize this is crucial in the heat

Q: Will I definitely see the Sable Antelope?

A: While Shimba Hills is one of the best places in Kenya to see them (the only place in East Africa where this antelope is found), wildlife is wild and sightings are never guaranteed . The reserve has healthy populations of elephant, buffalo, and giraffe which are commonly seen

Q: Is the hike to the falls safe?

A: Yes. All hikes are accompanied by an armed Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger to ensure your safety from wildlife and to guide you through the forest

Q: Can I add extra services on the day of the tour?

A: We recommend booking all extras in advance to ensure availability. Some services, like cultural visits or water sports, may be arranged on the day subject to guide and driver availability, but this cannot be guaranteed.
